A Study of Vaginal Cytology by Papanicolaou Smear in Early Detection of Cervical Cancer of Uterus

Abstract
Vaginal cytological examinations on 41,356 women for last 10 years from 1975 to 1984 were analyzed in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chonnam University Hospital. The results are as follows:
1. Abnormal cytological rates were 4.7%.
2. The prevalence rate of cervical cancer confirmed by pathology for 10 years was 2.7%. The rate of cervical intraepithelial neoplasm and that of invasive cervical cancer were 0.9% and 1.8%.
3. The prevalence rate of invasive cervical cancer was increasing by aging of women and the highest frequency was noted in the age group of sixties.
4. The false negative rate was 22.5% and the false positive rate was 9.8 %. The sensitivity, specificity of cytological screening were 77.5% and 90.2%.
